SOTD 1.2.10

While the rest of Band of Skulls' debut album is a heavy-hitting display of classic garage rock, "Honest" puts Emma Richardson's vocals at the forefront instead of those of frontman Russell Marsden to create a beautiful ballad. Besides being a nice change of pace in the context of Baby Darling Doll Face Honey, it serves as stripped-down setting where the raw talent of the Southampton trio can shine. The only other band that comes to mind that is creating this style of rock at this high of a caliber is The White Stripes, and that's some pretty good company to share. Having seen the band perform live as an opener for Metric, I can say that their gritty sound translates well into live performance, including the high-energy "heys" of "Hollywood Bowl" and the face-melting licks of "Fires" (which, for the record, is far better acoustic).

FUN FACT: Baby Darling Doll Face Honey was recorded at Radiohead's Courtyard Studios in Oxfordshire.
